FAQ
What is University College?
University College is an undergraduate program in which students are admitted without a declared major.
During the first year, students study under University College. Upon advancing to the second year, they select one of 46 majors and transition to the corresponding department.
For international students in particular, this structure provides time to adapt to the Korean university environment before selecting a major, allowing the first year to serve as a structured preparation period for their academic journey.
What curriculum does University College offer?
During the first year, students complete a foundational curriculum that includes required general education courses, Korean language courses, and the incubating program.
The incubating program is designed to help international students better adapt to their majors and university life, and it consists of three areas: Major Foundation, Korean Culture, and AX (AI Transformation).
How are major exploration and career support provided?
Students can explore majors through on-campus major fairs, exploration seminars, and the KU-Coach mentoring program, which connects students with professors. University College also offers additional programs to support career exploration.
How does major placement work? Are there GPA or additional requirements?
Upon successful completion of the first-year University College curriculum, students may select their desired major from among 46 departments (excluding programs such as Medicine and Teacher Education).
Major selection is not determined by GPA or additional standardized language test requirements.
How is University College different from the School of Interdisciplinary Studies or the Global Open Major Division?
While University College, the School of Interdisciplinary Studies, and the Global Open Major Division all allow students to choose their major upon entering the second year, University College differs in that it provides a separate curriculum and specialized programs, such as the Incubating Program, specifically designed for international students.
In addition, freshmen in University College follow a designated first-year curriculum, so they are not required to complete a separate course registration process during their first year.
Furthermore, University College students are not required to meet additional language proficiency requirements when advancing to their major in the second year. As a result, there are fewer barriers to entry, making the transition into a chosen major more accessible and less restrictive.
What affiliation is shown on the graduation certificate and degree?
After the first year, students move to their selected department. The graduation certificate and degree list the affiliated department, not University College.
